What is Voltaren Gel?

Voltaren Gel is a joint topical solution which is intended to provide direct relief to sore joints, muscles, and other regional aches through direct application. It comes in the form of a cream which you can apply to the affected areas, which, once absorbed, will deliver the active ingredient. The product is sold in tubes of various sizes: one example that we found contained 150 grams of the product.

How Does Voltaren Gel Work?

Voltaren Gel

Voltaren Gel

Voltaren Gel contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory product (the same category that includes acetaminophen and ibuprofen) called diclofenac, which is delivered directly to sore tissues by application in this gel form. By doing this, the pain relief product is placed where you need it most (say, the knees) rather than being distributed throughout the body.

It comes in a non-greasy gel form, allowing you to apply it readily, although you are encouraged to wash your hands promptly and thoroughly after using it.

Voltaren Gel Ingredients – Are they Safe & Effective?

We were not able to find a complete list of ingredients in this product, but the active ingredient is not hidden at all: diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory compound in the same family as many other over the counter pain treatments. This constitutes a small percentage of the material; the rest is the gel base which allows for the product to be absorbed through the skin.

What Are the Advantages of Voltaren Gel?

  • Topical application method lets you target it to treat your own pain
  • Easy to use.

What Are the Disadvantages of Voltaren Gel?

  • Gel delivery method can make it difficult to estimate how much you’ve used
  • The makers discourage you from using other NSAIDs (Tylenol, etc.) while using products containing this active ingredient

Voltaren Ge – FAQ’s

Q: How powerful is the active ingredient in this product?

A: It’s hard to say exactly, but fortunately, there is a range of strengths available, so you can find what works for you. The product’s label will tell you how much of the active ingredient is in it: for example, 1.16% vs. 2.32%. The latter will be twice as strong as the former. This can be convenient if you can only find one or the other: you could simply apply half as much of the stronger compound for the same result.

What are the Important Features?

  • It is intended to be applied to joints being affected by pain due to aging, injury, or ongoing disease, but is not a substitute for other treatments.
  • It should be thoroughly applied to the affected area
  • You should wash your hands thoroughly after use (unless, of course, you were using it on your hands!)

Q: How Should You Apply Voltaren Gel?

A: Apply several grams of the product to the affected area and massage in thoroughly. Be sure to wash your hands afterward, unless you are applying it to your hands (in which case, do not wash your hands for an hour after application). Don’t use more than a few grams per day over all your affected joints.

Q: How long does it take for Voltaren Gel to work?

A: Voltaren Emulgel contains 1.16% of diclofenac diethylammonium in a gel form. It is suitable for 3-4 applications a day for short-term pain relief, or for longer periods up to 2 weeks. It is proven to reduce acute pain within one hour of application.

Possible Side Effects

The product is not known for having any serious side effects. If you are using it on sensitive skin, it would be a good idea to take advantage of carrier oil to avoid any potential irritations.

Customer Reviews

There are numerous customer reviews which have to be considered about Voltaren Gel. Some of them are positive and some of them are quite ambiguous.

One person reports that he has used the product and uses it for his Achilles insertional tendonitis. However, he goes on to disclose that he has seen no changes after using the product. He goes on to explain the overall effect of anti-inflammatory medication as they are more appropriate for acute inflammation.

Another person, however, says that the product has managed to work for him in a short amount of time. It doesn’t lose for that much and it doesn’t go too deep but the solution does seem to work for him. He is also satisfied with the price as it is much better than the one in the US.

Voltaren Gel Review – Final Verdict

The product seems to be one which is well-made. It is brought by a company with a proper reputation which does add some credibility. The product contains natural ingredients which are well-known and are said to deliver quite a lot of benefits. Of course, as it is with every product, there are certain drawbacks that have to be accounted for. For instance, there are no studies which approve or validate the actual effects of the product.

Yet, we’d suggest that you discuss the matter with your personal physicist. It is important to get a professional opinion. Also, there are best joint pain relief product on the market that could be taken advantage of. The category is quite broad.

Bones are connected by joints, which allow us to move with ease. Joint damage can cause pain preventing you from doing the things you once loved. Topical joint relief products tend to work more quickly, helping to relieve pain directly in the affected area compared to products taken orally. A topical joint pain relief product should be evaluated on its: potential to block the transportation of pain signals, potential to act as a counterirritant to reduce soreness and Quality of Ingredients* backed by clinical research.

Severe Arthritis in Lower Back - IT HELPS
I have severe lower back arthritis, although I was prescribed this for my hand arthritis. I was in extreme pain one day and had run out of Sombre that I get from my massage therapist. Though I’ll give this a shot. I take diclofenac twice a day orally but sometimes that doesn’t help as much if I am super active. So I use it when I can’t take any extra pills…

It helps, my pain goes from a 9 to a 4. So because I’m in so much pain, any pain relief feels wonderful. (I take generic forms)

    I recommend it.

    Does not help, at all
I have a ligament problem down my leg, concentrated on my knee. My ortho doc suggested I try Voltaren. Does not work for me. It’s the same as Aspercreme, Icey Hot, all the other rub on ointments. Too bad. I can barely walk and have run out of treatments. I had hoped Voltaren, with its hype on TV was the answer. It is not.
  3. Jim

    Do not use with NSAIDs
In the article, you state not to take NSAIDs with Voltaren, which is true. But you use Tylenol as an example. Tylenol is not an NSAID. Ibuprofen is an example of an NSAID. I just didn’t want people to think that they can’t take Tylenol with this.
  4. Michael

Cheaper when it was a prescription drug
Some things you need to consider…Maybe this was better when a prescription was required as it cost me $11.49 for a 50 g tube. Each application for knees or the lower body is a 4.5-inch long ribbon or 4 g…This means this tube at the recommended applications, 4, per day will last you three days. One thing that you should take into account also is if you have high blood pressure or kidney disease. You really shouldn’t be taking this stuff. And those are two very prominent medical conditions in older people which also happens to be the same people that have arthritis problems that need the product. So in my case and in my opinion, it turns out that Voltaren is not only ridiculously expensive but useless.

    Voltaren gel with other medications
Hello, I presently take 6 2.5 mags methotrexate orally every week for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Can I use Voltaren topical cream on my hands for stiffness?
  6. Dan Blue

    No better than most
Bought this and a cheaper product–the Voltaren did almost nothing to relieve the pain in my feet–tried multiple times–the stuff I got for 3.00 done a better job–have gout and osteoporosis–very disappointing and way overpriced.
  7. Steven Engelhardt

    Voltaren Gel is for real
Voltaren was recommended by my pharmacist. After four days of four times, a day application wrist pain was significantly reduced. Wrist mobility and range of motion was almost completely restored.
  8. RIC

I’m 74, retired, 6’3′, 220 lbs… and need a total knee replacement of my right knee. It took a painful 8-10′ to get up out of bed and mobile each morning. I’m very active… but was 60%+ restricted in normal activities. I had one round of 5 days of Supartz knee injections about 7 years ago that offered great relief for about 3 years. All subsequent knee injections with all other versions/brands were totally ineffective. Then my VA ortho doc prescribed 1% Diclofenac gel. EUREKA!! In no less than 30 minutes after my first application, I experienced unbelievable relief! Easily 95% pain relief. I apply it twice daily; before bed and after my morning shower. I was instantly returned to 95% normal activity levels including landscaping, carpentry, shop-work, bicycling, and walking 3+ miles daily. But my knee’s bent range of motion did not improve as is understandable. Diclofenac has easily enabled me to delay a TKR! I can now hold off on surgery until diclofenac no longer works. This is also enabling me to ride out this COVID issue until elective surgeries are back in full swing with no virus connected complications. SIX stars out of five for 1% Diclofenac gel! I tell everyone with related pain issues about it! TBTG himself!
  9. Tony

    Voltaren works for me.
This product is like a miracle pain reliever for me. I’ve tried all types of creams, oils, medications to help my knee and leg pains. Other than prednisone this product works the best. Outperforms all others.
