What Is Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment?

Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment is an over-the-counter treatment for dry scalp. It is designated as a pre-shampoo treatment and is meant to be massaged directly into the scalp. And while most of the ingredients in the Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment formula are natural, some of them may have been synthesized. In any case, the manufacturers claim that their product works to soothe, nourish and protect the scalp from daily environmental stressors.

Moroccanoil is the name of the company that makes this product. According to the official website, Moroccanoil was founded by a woman named Carmen Tal after she received her first argan oil hair treatment.

How Does Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment Work?

Take one look at the official Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment and you will be able to tell that the company firmly believes in the power of argan oil treatments. Most of their products feature argan oil as the main ingredient, in fact. But what is argan oil and how does it affect the scalp and hair?

Argan oil is a type of plant oil that is derived from the kernels of the argan tree. Argan oil has received a lot of attention in the hair and skincare industries because it is a natural source of vitamin E. Vitamin E has the potential to reduce inflammation in the skin and may benefit scalp conditions in this way.

So Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment is supposed to work by nourishing the scalp with essential vitamins like vitamin E from argan oil. Argan oil also contains fatty acids that may further help condition the scalp and keep it from becoming excessively dry. This effect may even help prevent accelerated hair loss for some users.

Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment Ingredients – Are they Safe & Effective?

Now that we have an idea of how Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment works, let’s examine the ingredients:

Geranium Oil

Geranium oil is a type of plant oil that is harvested from the geranium flower plant. There have been some studies that indicate that treatments that include geranium oil could stipulate hair growth by regulating growth factors and contributing to the function of healthy skin cells.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E appears in the formula for this product as tocopherol. Tocopherol is a very common ingredient in skin and haircare products because it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent on the skin and helps prevent excessive oxidation. However, there are few studies that regard vitamin E as a proper treatment for overly-dry scalps.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a type of beta-hydroxy acid that is naturally derived from certain plant species. There have been some studies that indicate that salicylic acid is a safe treatment for seborrheic dermatitis, however more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Argan Oil

Argan oil is derived from the kernels of the argan tree which grows native in Morocco. The Pubmed staff has indicated that,

Argan oil pre-treatment was effective in protecting hair against oxidative damage. ATR outcomes were in accordance with protein loss results. In this study, the ATR testing method as a fast technique was used efficiently in quantification of hair damage.

However, this was just one study. Another study had the following to say about the efficacy of argan oil for scalp and hair applications:

Argan oil does not have any significant evidence supporting its use to improve hair growth, quality, or treatment of infestation.

Helps… but pricey for what you get
Been using this for 5 weeks because my scalp was acting mad flaky and tight, especially in winter. It definitely calmed the itch and made my scalp feel less desert?dry, but the flakes didn’t vanish fully. Smells amazing and gives a nice hydration kick, just wish it had more lasting power for the price.
