About the Brand/ Manufacturer

The manufacturer of this berberine cholesterol supplement is Luma Nutrition, an American-made and veteran-owned company. The founder of Luma Nutrition, Jake Langley, gained interest in healthy living after studying Kinesiology, but it was after serving as an Army Infantry Officer and facing the flawed health system in the US that he was motivated to start a brand that focuses on natural health solutions that are safe, transparent, and effective. Luma Nutrition promises to provide premium-quality, all-natural supplements that address various health challenges such as blood sugar levels, memory loss, fatigue, and mood swings.

How Does Luma Nutrition Berberine Work?

Luma Nutrition Berberine claims to deliver pure berberine HCl into your bloodstream, where it may address blood sugar level concerns. According to a pilot study in the Journal of Metabolism by Jun Yin et al, berberine was tested on patients with type 2 diabetes and was found to be a potent oral hypoglycemic agent with beneficial effects on lipid metabolism. This study was conducted in 2008, which makes it quite old, so a recent study to approve these claims may be required.

Its lipid metabolism capabilities are seen in its interaction with the intestinal microorganisms. The intestinal flora is claimed to convert berberine into derivatives that regulate short-chain fatty acids, branched-chain amino acids, and trimethylamine-N-oxide, which are absorbed into the liver as per studies in the Frontiers in Pharmacology journal. Researchers Yajie Cai et al provide that these metabolites are absorbed into the liver and help reduce liver lipid production and increase circulating lipid removal.

However, Berberine weight loss causes side effects in users. According to a review in Phytotherapy Research by Zhongyu Li et al, the common side effects of berberine consumption are gastrointestinal symptoms, including constipation and diarrhea. Moreover, there is a need for more research on its clinical effects in high-quality randomized clinical trials.

Luma Nutrition Berberine Ingredients – Are they Effective

Some of the main ingredients in this supplement include:

Berberine HCl

This ingredient was derived from the Berberis aristata bark. A 2019 study in the Journal of Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine investigated the efficacy of berberine on glucose-lipid metabolism, inflammatory factors, and insulin resistance in patients with metabolic syndrome and found it to be effective.

Hypermellose

The information about this particular ingredient seems obscure or unavailable from journals. In its place, there is hypromellose, which is a vegan-friendly capsule shell made from plant-based cellulose. It is not clear whether Luma Nutrition intended this and made a typing error in writing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose instead.

Magnesium Stearate

This is a white powder used as an additive in supplements due to its lubricating, formulation, and anti-caking properties. It works to enhance the consistency, quality, and production of supplements. According to Toxicology Reports, cumulative exposure to magnesium via multiple sources present in food additives may be of concern, thus requiring further evaluation.

Rice Flour

In supplements, rice flour is used as a binder, flow agent, and filler, while its nutritional value is not considered. However, studies in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology establish that the protein content of rice flour is higher than that of dairy milk and yoghurt, and as such, can be used to develop rice-based processed food for the prevention of malnutrition.

Side Effects

The main side effects of berberine are constipation and diarrhea. While these adverse side effects are claimed to be mild, they can be downright uncomfortable. Users prone to gastrointestinal issues should be wary of this product.

Safety

Berberine, as an ingredient, is generally safe for most users and can be taken daily. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid this product as it poses kernicterus risk (a form of brain damage) in newborns and young children.

Users taking prescription medications for blood pressure, blood thinning, and diabetes should also avoid berberine due to its harmful interactions. Those with heart, liver, or kidney conditions should also stay away from berberine unless advised otherwise by a healthcare provider.

Product Price

Luma Nutrition Berberine costs:

  • 1 bottle (30-day supply) – $29.99
  • 3 bottles (90-day supply) – $26.79 per bottle
  • 6 bottles (180-day supply) -$23.99 per bottle

These costs apply when you buy once. If you subscribe to the company’s monthly subscription order, you stand a chance of saving 25% on all orders. You get to enjoy free shipping always and a free gift on future orders.

What Do the Luma Nutrition Berberine Reviews Say?

Luma Nutrition Berberine customer reviews are a mixed bag, with some customers finding it effective for blood sugar control, appetite management, and suppressed sugar cravings. On the flip side, some customers experienced severe intestinal issues, which affected how they interacted with the supplement.

Here are some of the customer reviews:

Have used this product in the past, but changed to another because of cost. I feel this product was better than others; it does cut my appetite, although that’s not why I take it, but that is a benefit. I use it more for lowering my A1c. –Julie (Amazon) 5/5 stars

I have been taking this supplement for about a month, so far, it’s easy to swallow, and inflammation does seem less bothersome. I do feel more upbeat and energized. The only thing I don’t like is that it does have a smell and a slight bitter taste. –Amber (Amazon) 4/5 stars.

I used it for several weeks, and my sugar seemed to go up instead of down. My urine turned yellow. I noticed they use maltodextrin, which is worse than sugar. If it is supposed to lower sugar, that is not good. I have discontinued, and my sugar has come back down. Not worth the money. – Helen (Walmart) 2/5 stars

Had stomach problems after a day or two. Read that some people have that problem. Won’t be buying again. –Deb (Walmart) 1/5 stars

Luma Nutrition Berberine Review – Conclusion

Luma Nutrition Berberine is an average berberine gut health supplement at best. It offers cardiovascular, gut health, and metabolism support, which may culminate in better health and wellness in the long run. It is easy to swallow and has considerable positive reviews on online marketplaces such as Amazon.

However, customers were not impressed by its smell and bitter taste. It also causes stomach issues, which was a major turn-off for users who endured it. While some users did not experience any change to their blood sugar levels, others witnessed a surge in their levels, which was attributed to the presence of maltodextrin. One negative reviewer claimed that this supplement gave her nightmares, and upon discontinuing it, the nightmares stopped.

That said, Luma Nutrition Berberine could appeal to you as a consumer, and if this is the case, you can order it directly from the official website. If this product is not what you are looking for, then there are many berberine supplements on the market. Just do your research and go for it.

Kind of Works, Kind of Doesn’t..
I’m 52 and took this for 7 weeks hoping it’d help steady my blood sugar swings. Before, I’d crash mid-afternoon.. after, the crashes were a little milder but still happening. Didn’t feel any major metabolic shift or weight change either. It’s okay, but I needed something with more punch. Just didn’t hit the goal like I hoped.
