What is Noom?

Noom is a company within the technology and health space whose mission is to “help people everywhere lead healthier lives through behavior change.” Based around the user’s interaction with the Noom app, the user learns about behavior change and how to put methods into action through reading original articles on a daily basis. Users log their food using a color system to learn the caloric density of the foods they eat and log their exercises.

Noom users also have access to a Goals Specialist that assists them in setting personal SMART goals. After the trial period ends, the user will gain access to their own support team, made up of a group coach and other Noom users who are on the same journey towards developing a healthy lifestyle.

Ultimately, the purpose of the program is not just to help users lose weight. Noom is working to help users change the habits they’ve developed around food and their lifestyle in order to create long-lasting, healthy habits that will help sustain the changes they’ve made in the program for years to come.

How Does Noom Work?

Noom’s program uses a combination of SMART goal setting, coaching, food logging, active support groups, and relevant, research-backed articles tailored to the needs of the users to provide a well-rounded program to best support users as they work towards personal health goals and sustain their progress.

Below are the features of this program:

  • Goal Setting – a study in the BMC Nursing journal concluded that simplifying goal setting to goals that have the greatest potential clinical impact or have the greatest significance to the person may increase the success of weight loss goal achievement.
  • Learning – learning how to tackle your weight loss through research-backed articles could be enlightening. A narrative review in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics discovered that using habit as tools to maintain weight loss was effective than using conventional interventions.
  • Food Logging – through the Noom app, users can learn about the caloric density of the foods to help balance meals for successful weight management. A study in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences concluded that low caloric intake was effective in maintaining weight loss.
  • Support Group – a randomized controlled trial in PLoS One concluded that a Group Support Lifestyle Modification programme was more effective in achieving targeted weight loss, enhancing weight self-efficacy, friend social support, and quality of life compared to dietary counseling.

Noom Review – Does It Really Work?

According to a study conducted in 2016 with over 35,000 participants, 78% of Noom users sustained weight loss over 9 months[2].

Noom is getting me ready to see my old high school girlfriend.
I haven’t seen my old high school girlfriend for 22 years, and she’s coming to town next month. She specifically asked if we could get together and I said I’d love to. But I lied. Why? I got fat over the last 2 decades. According to her Facebook pictures, she’s still slim and gorgeous. I have no full-body pictures on my page so it’s not necessarily obvious that I look this way. I started taking Noom practically the minute she let me know she was going to be doing this trip, luckily a few months ago. I’m so proud that I have already lost 43 pounds. I still won’t be thin next month, but I’ll look a lot better than I have looked in a long time. Thank you, Noom Diet!

Losing weight is easier with Noom
About a decade ago, I set out to lose a significant amount of weight and I did. I got down to a weight I was happy with but the whole process took me about a year. It also took a lot of time and loads of effort which is not a problem in and of itself. Hard work certainly pays off. Fast forward 5 years after that and I gained weight again. I couldn’t wait a year this time around and my schedule simply didn’t permit a crazy exercise regimen. I tried Noom Diet to help with the process and I got down to my target weight in half the time: just 6 months.

    A massive help
I broke my femur in an auto accident and that seriously limited my physical activity. Even after the bone had healed, I still had to go through a process of rehab that limited my mobility. On top of all that I was gaining weight and it was seriously bringing me down. Once I was cleared to start exercising again, it was still limited and the pounds kept getting added on. I started using Noom Diet in the hopes that it would supplement my limited range of exercise and it really helped me balance out my weight until I was fully back on my feet.

I decided to try Noom Diet
I have diabetes and fibromyalgia. I also get migraines and cluster headaches. These four problems make it very hard for me to do what I need to do all the time to be healthy. I decided to try Noom Diet, because it seemed to have a lot of health benefits. I was a little skeptical when I started taking it, but to my surprise, it really does make me feel better. I don’t have near as many aches and pains as I did before and my headaches have all but gone. I’m not sure which ingredient or benefit of Noom Diet does all that, but I’m a believer and will continue to use it.
