As women, our bodies go through many changes. It can be wonderful and amazing at times, other times you may feel like your literally losing your mind.
Do you remember as a child, your mom being sweet loving, and tender one minute, and in a split second, she was screaming to the top of her lungs, telling you and your little brother to go outside and play? Well, it was probably those crazy hormones wreaking havoc inside her.
Most women had no understanding of this. They thought it was normal and something every woman experienced.
Let me introduce three hormones you need to know about and the proven remedies to balance them naturally.
There are 3 common hormone imbalances for women; Dr. Sara Gottfried has coined “the 3 Charlie’s angles,” which are cortisol, estrogen, and thyroid hormones.
Dr. Sara Gottfried said it best:

Beginning with the Basics
First, let’s look at what causes these symptoms and then take a look at what we can do to reduce these symptoms with simple lifestyle changes, exercise, and supplements.
I’ve had the pleasure of learning about hormones from a wonderful physician by the name of Dr. Sara Gottfried who wrote the book titled “The Hormone Cure.”
Your brain is the main control center, directing your body on when and how these hormones will be released. Let’s start by learning a little about each hormone and then I’ll get into how you can manage your hormones with proven natural remedies.
Cortisol is king. It’s your body’s main stress hormone and it’s produced in your adrenal glands. Do you ever have that feeling of being exhausted but wired at the same time? Well, that’s elevated cortisol. You live in a world you’re constantly in a go, go, go mentality. Am I right?
Cortisol helps control our blood pressure, blood sugar, and our immune function. It’s a lot of responsibility for one hormone.
What causes elevated cortisol? Stress, without a doubt, but your body can be in a state of high cortisol and low cortisol all in the same day and sometimes within just hours of each other.
Here’s an example, low cortisol can be associated with a car trying to run on an empty tank of gas. You’re not going anywhere no matter how hard you try.
Low cortisol is a direct result of your body being in a state of elevated cortisol for prolonged periods of time.
Symptoms of elevated cortisol include but are not limited to:
- Feeling wired yet tired
- Feeling like your constantly racing from one task to another
- Memory lapses or feeling distracted
- Sugar cravings, usually chocolate
- Increased belly fat
Limit your alcohol intake, decrease caffeine, and take fish oil daily. Try adding in Vitamin C to your daily supplement regimen
Symptoms of low cortisol include:
- Fatigue, you fall asleep as soon as you sit down
- Crying for no particular reason
- Feel stressed 90% of the time
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Salt cravings
- Excess sweating
These are just a few of the many symptoms you can have with cortisol imbalance. Remember, cortisol is “King” so it’s important you get it under control.
To help balance low cortisol, add in daily exercise, walking, running, cycling, whatever you enjoy. Plus, make sure you are eating a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
This hormone also plays a major role as it controls the body’s sensitivity to other hormones, like estrogen and cortisol. It also regulates our body’s ability to burn calories and regulate our metabolism.
When your thyroid is in a normal state of balance, you feel energetic, your mind’s clear, and your weight is much easier to manage. Your bowels are regular and you don’t have to wear socks and gloves to bed.
Below is the low down on low thyroid symptoms:
- Hair loss
- Sensitivity to cold (wearing socks to bed)
- Constipation, you have less than one bowl movement daily
- Dry skin, straw like hair
- Low sex drive
- Fatigue, particularly in the morning
- Difficulty concentrating
- Depression or moodiness
Make sure you’re taking a good multivitamin as this will help keep your thyroid in check. Your body needs adequate amounts of copper, zinc, selenium, Vitamin A, and iron.

So, now for our final hormone.
You remember those dreaded puberty years, your first period, breasts, acne, and mood changes. Wow! Your hormones were soaring.
There are several things that affect the level of estrogen in a women’s body. These factors can include, aging ovaries, cortisol levels, the amount of fat, fiber, and alcohol we consume, and Xenoestrogens.
Xenoestrogens, what a strange word. These are actually synthetic chemicals that can mimic estrogen in your body.
Studies have shown we are exposed regularly to more than seven hundred of these dangerous chemicals.
Choosing natural and organic products like, toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen, lotion and skin care products help to reduce these synthetic chemicals. Opt for eating whole foods that don’t contain preservatives.
It’s true; we live in a plastic world. By slowly reducing the number of plastics you use in your home, and choosing glass instead, you will be avoiding potentially dangerous xenoestrogens.
Below are some common symptoms of elevated estrogen:
- Abnormal Pap smears
- Mood swings, weepiness
- Breast tenderness
- Gall bladder issues
- Red flush on your face or diagnosis of rosacea
If you are experiencing symptoms of elevated estrogen, try reducing alcohol intake, cut out caffeine, avoid xenoestrogens, increase your daily fiber intake, exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep.
Here are some common symptoms of low estrogen:
- Leaky or overactive bladder, frequent bladder infections
- You walk into a room and suddenly forget what you were doing
- Droopy breasts
- Bone loss
- Achy joints
- Trouble sleeping, waking up in the middle of the night
- Night sweats or hot flashes
Try these natural tips to help with low estrogen; add flax seed to your meals, cut out gluten, avoid caffeine, try acupuncture, add maca to your morning smoothies and include Vitamin E to your daily supplements.
You don’t have to suffer from hormone imbalances any longer. There are so many natural approaches to regaining your life and your sanity.
