Anyone who has ever spent an entire day on their feet has probably suffered from swollen ankles and feet. This frequent medical problem is painful and annoying to sufferers. Fortunately, it is not normally a cause for concern. Unless there is an additional medical condition, individuals should just work to alleviate the swelling and rest their feet.

Swollen feet typically occur after someone walks or stands for a long time. In some cases, it may be a sign of a serious health problem. An injury to the foot can cause swelling. This can normally be resolved within a week and ice can help to reduce the temporary enlargement of the ankle. In addition to this cause, some cases of swollen feet occur due to venous insufficiency. Within the veins, there are valves that stop blood from moving the wrong way.

If these valves are faulty, it can allow blood to flow in the wrong direction and pool within the legs or feet. In addition to swelling, venous insufficiency can also cause the skin to change in the affected area.

Infections and blood clots can cause swollen feet. Diabetic patients are more likely to develop these infections. If a diabetic individual notices blisters or sores, they may be developing nerve damage within their feet.

Blood clots can also cause swelling, but they do not result in nerve damage. Instead, blood clots can lodge within other parts of the body and stop the blood from flowing properly. If this occurs, it can lead to death in a short space of time.

The last medical condition that causes swollen feet is organ disease. If the heart, liver or kidneys stop functioning properly, it can lead to water retention. These organs have to be able to remove waste and fluid from the body.

When they are not weakened or damaged, they cannot remove fluid and it starts to build up within the body’s tissue. Over time, this can lead to swollen feet and other medical issues.

How Do Swollen Feet Affect Water Retention?

Swollen feet and water retention are essentially the same condition. When someone’s feet swell, it is due to water being retained within the tissue. It may be caused by a range of medical issues, but the results are the same. Water retention within the feet will cause them to swell.

How is This Condition Diagnosed and Treated?

This medical condition can be diagnosed by examining the affected feet. After this is done, the physician may perform other tests to figure out what the cause is. The doctor may order an ECG, blood tests or a urinalysis. They may also order a chest X-ray.

When swollen feet occur without a serious medical condition like heart failure, it can be treated at home. The easiest way to treat the ailment is to raise the legs above the heart. Exercise can also improve blood flow and help the body detoxify.

Individuals may alleviate swollen feet by wearing support stockings or losing weights. Tight clothes and sodium should be avoided. In addition, losing weight may help ease the problem.

How Can it be Treated Naturally?

All of the solutions above can be natural methods to deal with the issue. Individuals can take herbal supplements or herbal diuretics to encourage the release of built up fluids. Other treatment like compression stockings can help to stimulate blood flow and encourage the release of excess fluids.

What are the Exercises and Diet for Swollen Feet?

Any excess sodium encourages the absorption of excess water in the body. To prevent this from occurring, individuals must reduce the amount of salt in their diet and drink more water. In addition to changing their diets, cardiovascular exercise can help improve blood flow throughout the body.

Swollen feet occur after an extended period of standing or walking. For most individuals, reducing the amount of time spent standing can solve this problem. If there are other medical problems, these ailments must be treated as well.
