Nasty evil stretch marks – how long do they stay?

Q: My husband has decided to celebrate our 5th marriage anniversary at the beach. At beach party you know that we have to wear beach clothes, two pieces, swimsuit etc. I have a huge amount of stretch marks on my belly and on my back. I want to make the stretch marks less visible so that I can wear the bikini without any fear. I have only 1 months, so please help me what I can do to fade them in a short span of time. Thanks in advance!

Stretch marks are scars on your skin’s dermis layer caused by damage in collagen fibers and elastin as a result of abnormal hormonal levels and skin tearing during weight gain or weight loss*. The dermis is the second layer of the skin which makes it difficult to completely heal or remove* stretch marks. Unfortunately, your stretch marks will probably be there for life, most especially if you’ve had them for a long time.

The good news is that, it’s still possible for you to “lose*” your stretch marks by the time you wear that two piece on your wedding anniversary. Now, depending on the severity of your stretch marks, there are some tips you can try to make your stretch marks invisible.

If your stretch marks are not too severe, you might want to consider getting one of the latest dermatological procedures available today called laser treatment. The treatment works by reaching very small patches of skin on both the epidermis (first layer) and dermis (second layer) of the skin which stimulates the skin to produce collagen.

Since the fractional laser reaches the dermis, it has been shown that laser treatment can improve* the appearance of stretch marks with just one treatment session. Normally, though, it takes at least three sessions over a period of three to four months for visible results to be noticed. You may still want to get the procedure but continue with your sessions even after your big event with your hubby.

The all-time quick cover up for skin imperfections will also come in handy in your situation—make up! Makeup can do wonders to your face but do not forget that it can also do wonders to your body, and yes, that includes covering up your stretch marks.

Basic makeup you will need to do the trick are concealer, foundation, translucent powder or finishing powder, and if desired, a glitter powder. For all of these, you will have to buy another set that matches your body’s skin tone rather than your face, and note that all of it must be waterproof. Getting the exact shade as your belly and back skin will be difficult but remember that you can always mix lighter and darker shades to come up with a shade closest to your skin color before you apply.

Apply first the concealer over each stretch mark, followed by the foundation. You may also want to try BB creams which already contain both concealer and foundation. Again, make sure you choose a waterproof BB cream. Follow up with a translucent powder or finishing powder to seal your makeup. Glitter powder will add magic* to your masterpiece and help literally make you shine.

As with doing your face makeup, this too will need some practicing. You might want to try on your makeup long before your wedding anniversary. Splash water onto it too to check if your makeup product can indeed withstand water exposure.

Keep in mind that the makeup is not permanent. So, pack your make up kit early to make sure you do not leave it behind. Once on vacation, remember to check those stretch marks from time-to-time and touch up whenever you need to. Have fun!
