Stages of Sleep
Stage 1 – This is the transition period from wakefulness to sleep. The brain emits high amplitude theta waves. These are slow waves to relax the body. It lasts for 5 to 10 minutes. However, if you are awakened during this stage, you are not really asleep.
Stage 2 – This second stage lasts for about 20 minutes. Here, the mind starts to produce* rhythmic brain waves called sleep spindles. The temperature of the body begins to decrease* and the heart rate starts to slow down.
Stage 3 – Delta waves are being produced by the brain. This is the transition from light to very deep sleep.
Stage 4 – This is the portion where the person goes to deep sleep. It lasts for about 30 minutes. Sometimes, sleepwalking and bed-wetting occur during this stage.
Stage 5 – Dreams come at this stage. This is the rapid eye movement. Here, the sleeper experience eye movements. The respiration rate and brain activity are increased at this stage.
