Dark circles also referred to as periorbital dark circles are blemishes that occur around the eyes. In most cases they are taken as signs of exhaustion or sleep deprivation although is sometimes not the case. The main causes of dark circles are genetics, sun exposure, rubbing the eyes too much, aging, certain types of medication and nasal congestion. Fatigue and lack of sleep can also lead to the development of dark circles. There are various ways of getting rid of the blemishes as described below.


Cucumber is an effective skin toner and astringent. An astringent is a substance that improves* skin elasticity and turgidity by drawing tissue together. Take a cucumber and grate it. After grating, squeeze out the juice into a container. Use a cotton ball to apply the juice onto the dark circles. Use one cotton ball for each eye and leave them there for some time.

Raw Potato

Just like a cucumber, grate a raw potato either by hand or using a food processor. Squeeze out the juice from the grated potato and then use two cotton balls to apply it to both eyes. Both cucumber and raw potato not only get rid of dark circles but also relax the eyes.

Rose Water

Rose water is effective in giving the skin a special glow and healthy look. To enjoy the benefits of rose water, simply use cotton balls to apply it under and around the eyes. You should do this regularly to fully get rid of dark circles.

Almond Oil

This is a dark circles remedy that has been in use for a long time. All you have to do is apply a few drops around the eyes where the dark circles occur. Leave the oil on the skin overnight. Repeat this process every day until the blemishes disappear.

Lemon Juice

Lemons are used to cure* a wide range of skin conditions such as sun spots. Lemon juice is also very effective for getting rid of dark circle around the eyes. Just squeeze out the juice in a container and apply it in the dark circles. Leave it on for some time and then wash it off with cold water.


Apples have tannic acid in them as well as potassium and vitamin B and C. All these components are essential in the fight against dark circles. To use apples, cut one up in slices. Place to slices on your eyes and leave them there for half an hour. The best slices are ones that have been chilled. You can also blend the apples and use the resulting paste.

Cold Water

Cold temperatures are good for getting rid of dark circles. A splash of cold water on the eyes can remove* dark circles. Cold water can also help to soothe and relax the eyes as well as reduce* wrinkling.

Mint Leaves

These are best used when they are mixed together with tomato juice. You can mash or crush the leaves so as to get the juice from them.


Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties are ideal for removing* dark circles. Mix some turmeric powder with pineapple juice and apply the resulting paste on the dark circles. Leave it for a few minutes before wiping it away with a damp cloth. Repeat daily until the circles are gone.

Skin Brighteners

Look for a skin brightening product that works well for dull skin. A skin brightener can get rid of dark circles under your eyes as well as brighten your facial skin. Ensure that you hav used an approved skin brightener.
