Sexual Decline In Aging – How To Be More Sexually Active

After food, clothing, and shelter, sex is the next most basic human need. Both male and female bodies go through various changes as we age. These occur due to hormonal changes.

Life phases such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause affect a woman’s sex drive, whereas a drop in testosterone levels affects that of men.

Causes Of Low Sex Drive

The most important reason for experiencing low libido as one ages is the hormonal changes that take place in the body with aging. This accounts for almost 70% of the cases.

In men, hormonal changes having an impact on libido are directly the result of low testosterone levels, which are at their highest in the late teens and start declining after then.

In women, this is a more complicated cascade, involving several hormones at different phases of life.

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are the hormones that affect a woman’s sexual drive and functioning, with the most influential hormone being testosterone.

Although hormonal levels fluctuate with menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and nursing, their most drastic effects are seen during menopause.

As estrogen and testosterone levels fall drastically during and after menopause, women experience lower sexual drive and increased vaginal dryness.

Apart from hormones, stress, diseases, quality of your relationship is also important factors that affect your sex life.

Avoiding Sexual Decline

Avoiding Sexual Decline

Intimacy has no age limit. One of the biggest myths is that sexual desire does not exist in senior citizens. This sexuality myth needs to be broken.
Recent studies have shown that individuals aged 70 to 80 years are also sexually active and can enjoy healthy sex life.

However, in order to do this, one needs to be both physically and mentally healthy. Maintaining hormone levels, particularly testosterone is key.

Here Are Natural Ways To Boost Testosterone Levels:

  • Exercise regularly as it is helps prevent several lifestyle-related diseases. Resistance training and high-intensity interval training are the best forms of exercises that help boost testosterone levels in both the short- and long-term.
  • Cortisol is a hormone that our body releases when we are stressed. This hormone has a not so friendly relationship with testosterone as it immediately reduces testosterone levels. Thus, managing day-to-day stressful situations can go a long way in maintaining your testosterone levels. Opt for yoga, meditation or a long, brisk walk, maybe a sport, anything that will help you tackle stress and clear out your mind when stressed. If art or gardening is your stress busters, go for it!
  • Quantity of Sleep
  • Both quality and quantity of sleep are important and often ignored. Sleep-deprived individuals are seen to have low testosterone levels as compared to those who took adequate rest. Make sure to keep aside 8 hours for a good shut-eye. This will not just ensure that your everyday energy and concentration levels are high, it will prevent Alzheimer’s disease, one of the commonest disorders of the elderly, which is seen in persons with poor sleep.
  • Limit the intake of sugary foods as they decrease the levels of testosterone hormone. This occurs because sugar causes insulin levels to rise which adversely affect testosterone levels. Not to mention, sugary foods lead to high risk of heart disease and diabetes, both of which are detrimental to good sex life. Keep the empty calories at bay by avoiding sugary drinks, artificially sweetened foods like donuts, cakes, cookies, etc. Instead opt for natural sugars like fresh fruits, unsweetened yogurt, honey, dates, etc.
  • Do not completely avoid fats. Both mono- and polyunsaturated as well as saturated fats are essential for building testosterone. It is important that your body gets at least 40% of energy from fats.
  • Always keep your weight under check. Overweight men are more likely to have low testosterone levels. Research shows that losing those excess pounds can help in improving testosterone levels.
  • Same goes for the women too. In fact, obesity is a mood killer, heart-killer and sexual drive killer.

  • A healthy lifestyle also involves soaking up the early morning sun. This helps you get enough vitamin D. Studies show that vitamin D and calcium in the elderly help improve testosterone levels.

Here Are Ways To Boost Estrogen Levels:

Ways To Boost Estrogen Levels
  • Quitting smoking is one of the first things you need to do as it affects the endocrine system and hampers the body’s ability to produce estrogen effectively.
  • Drinking coffee on a regular basis has shown to maintain higher estrogen levels than in women who do not drink coffee.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity and the addition of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet stimulates the body to produce estrogen.
  • Meditation and yoga have shown to have benefit when it comes to both mental and physical health. Studies have shown yoga to improve estrogen levels in postmenopausal women.
