What Is Activia Yogurt?

Activia is a brand of yogurt that is marketed as a digestive aid. It was introduced by the French dairy company Danone in 1987 and is now available in many countries worldwide.

Activia yogurt contains live and active probiotic cultures, specifically the strain Bifidobacterium animalis DN-173 010 (also known as Bifidus Regularis), which is said to help regulate the digestive system and improve gut health. The probiotics in Activia are said to work by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and reducing the growth of harmful bacteria.

Activia yogurt comes in a variety of flavors, including strawberry, blueberry, peach, vanilla, and plain, and is available in different fat levels, including nonfat, low-fat, and whole milk versions. It is often marketed as a healthy snack or breakfast food and is popular among people who are looking to improve their digestive health or incorporate more probiotics into their diet.

According to Georgia Giannopoulos R.D.-A.P., registered dietitian and manager of NYPBeHealthy, she would recommend people eat foods containing probiotics because it puts the healthy bacteria back into your gut and restores gut health.

About The Brand

Activia is produced by Danone (known as Dannon in the US), a multinational company focused on dairy products and plant-based alternatives. Founded in 1919 in Barcelona, Spain, Danone has grown into a global giant, operating in over 120 countries.

Introduced in 1987 in France, Activia has since expanded worldwide. Despite its health-focused branding, the company’s heavy emphasis on gut health and microbiome research has drawn skepticism from some critics regarding the actual benefits of its products.

Danone operates production facilities globally, where it follows local food safety regulations, though compliance and standards may vary across regions.

How Does Activia Probiotic Yogurt Work?

Activia yogurt contains live and active probiotic cultures [1], specifically the strain Bifidobacterium animalis DN-173 010 (also known as Bifidus Regularis), which is said to help regulate the digestive system and improve gut health. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, can have a beneficial effect on the host’s health.

The probiotics in Activia yogurt work by colonizing the gut with beneficial bacteria, which can help to balance the microbiome and promote healthy digestion. The Bifidus Regularis strain in Activia yogurt is specifically designed to survive the journey through the digestive tract and reach the colon, where it can exert its beneficial effects.

In addition to its probiotic content, Activia yogurt also contains calcium, which is important for bone health, and protein [2], which is necessary for building and repairing tissues in the body. It is also low in fat and calories, making it a healthy snack or breakfast option for people who are trying to maintain a healthy diet.

However, it is important to note that while Activia yogurt may be helpful for some people in improving gut health, it is not a cure-all and should not be relied upon as the sole solution for digestive problems. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management are also important factors in maintaining gut health.

Activia Ingredients: Are They Safe & Effective?

danone activia yogurt supplement facts

Danone Activia Yogurt Supplement Facts

The ingredients in Activia yogurt are generally considered safe for consumption, and the product has been approved for sale by regulatory agencies in the countries where it is sold.

The primary active ingredient in Activia yogurt is the strain Bifidobacterium animalis DN-173 010 (Bifidus Regularis) [3], which has been studied for its potential health benefits in promoting gut health and improving digestion. While the research on the effectiveness of this specific strain is not entirely consistent, many studies have shown a positive effect on digestive health.

Alongside the probiotic strain, other ingredients in the formula also contribute to Activia’s overall nutritional profile and taste.

Cane Sugar

Added to improve palatability, the sugar content has been a point of criticism. While research in the Journal of Nutrition [4] indicates that moderate sugar consumption as part of a balanced diet is acceptable, the American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar intake to maintain cardiovascular health.

Milk Protein Concentrate

This ingredient boosts the protein content of the yogurt. According to IJ Pharmaceutical Research [5], milk proteins are complete proteins that provide all essential amino acids and have been associated with increased satiety and improved body composition.

Lactic Acid Cultures (L. bulgaricus, L. lactis, S. thermophilus)

These traditional yogurt cultures are responsible for fermenting milk into yogurt. Studies in Frontiers indicated that these cultures not only create yogurt’s characteristic texture and taste but may also provide additional health benefits by producing bioactive peptides during fermentation.

These benefits align with insights shared in our Probiotic America Perfect Biotics Reviews, where similar strains were shown to support gut balance, improve digestion, and reduce bloating.

In addition, Activia yogurt also contains other ingredients that are commonly found in yogurt products, such as milk, sugar, and fruit. While some flavors may contain added sugars, the total sugar content is relatively low compared to many other sweetened foods and beverages.

Overall, the ingredients in Activia yogurt are generally considered safe and effective for most people. However, individuals with lactose intolerance or milk allergies may need to avoid this product, and those with diabetes or other medical conditions that require strict dietary control should consult their healthcare provider before adding Activia yogurt to their diet.

According to the Retail Dietitians Business Alliance, Activia may help reduce the frequency of minor digestive discomfort when consumed twice daily for two weeks.

How To Use Activia Probiotic Yogurt?

For optimal results, Danone recommends consuming Activia twice daily for at least two weeks as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Each serving is one 4-ounce cup of yogurt. The product can be eaten at any time of day, though many consumers prefer it as a breakfast option or afternoon snack. For those concerned about sugar content, the plain or vanilla varieties contain less added sugar than fruit flavors.

The product should be kept refrigerated and consumed before the expiration date to ensure probiotic viability.

Benefits Of Activia Probiotic Yogurt

Activia yogurt provides some digestive and nutritional benefits, but its impact may not be significant for everyone, especially when compared to more targeted probiotic solutions.

  • Digestive Health – Activia contains live probiotics like Bifidobacterium animalis DN-173 010, which help regulate digestion, reduce bloating, and improve gut health.
  • Immune Support – Some varieties, like Activia+, include added vitamins C, D, and zinc, offering 20% of daily value to support immune function.
  • Probiotics Content – Activia yogurt contains live and active probiotic cultures, which may help promote gut health, support a healthy immune system, and improve digestion.
  • Effectiveness – The effectiveness of Activia yogurt in promoting gut health is not universally accepted, and some studies have shown mixed results.
  • Bone Health – Each serving provides about 15% of the daily calcium requirement, which is essential for maintaining strong bones and overall health.
  • Side Effects Of Activia Probiotic Yogurt

Most consumers tolerate Activia well, but some individuals may experience temporary digestive symptoms when first introducing probiotics to their diet. These can include mild bloating, gas, or changes in bowel movements as the gut microbiome adjusts to the new probiotic strains.

People with severe lactose intolerance may experience discomfort due to the product’s dairy base, though the fermentation process reduces lactose content somewhat compared to milk. Those with milk allergies should avoid the product entirely.

If unusual or severe symptoms occur, discontinuation is advised, followed by consultation with a healthcare provider.

    Safety Of Activia Probiotic Yogurt

Activia is generally recognized as safe for most individuals when consumed as directed. The probiotic strains used have been tested in multiple clinical studies without significant adverse effects.

The product is produced in facilities that comply with food safety regulations, and Danone implements quality control measures throughout production. Activia is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, despite its digestive health claims.

While probiotics are generally safe for healthy individuals, those with compromised immune systems, serious underlying health conditions, or who are pregnant should consult healthcare providers before adding probiotic supplements to their diet.

Product Price of Activia Probiotic Yogurt

Activia is priced higher than regular yogurt, mainly because it’s marketed as a functional food that supports gut health. Here’s a breakdown of its pricing:

    – 12-pack of 4 oz cups:

  • Priced around $6.99–$7.99
  • That’s about $0.58–$0.67 per serving

    – 24-pack option:

  • Costs roughly $12.99–$14.99
  • Lowers the per-serving price to $0.54–$0.62

    – Coupons and Discounts:

Activia sometimes offers $1.00–$2.00 off through their website or retail partners

Compared to probiotic supplements, which can cost $20–$40 per month, Activia might seem like a more affordable and food-based alternative though the effectiveness may vary for different individuals.

What Do the Activia Yogurt Customer Reviews Says?

Activia® Mixed Berry & Black Cherry Yogurt has received a range of feedback from customers. While some appreciate its creamy texture and the balance of fruity flavors, others have pointed out areas where the product could improve. Below are detailed examples of customer opinions:

“I really wanted to enjoy this yogurt because the flavor combination of mixed berry and black cherry sounded amazing. While the texture was smooth and creamy, the overall flavor felt overly artificial to me. It’s okay, but I don’t think I’d repurchase it.” – Christie M., Chicago, IL

“I was excited to try this yogurt because of the added probiotics, which are great for digestion. However, I found it far too sweet for my liking. The sweetness overpowers the fruitiness, making it difficult to enjoy. It’s not terrible, but it could definitely use some balance.” – Rebecca P., Seattle, WA

“The portion size is convenient, and the yogurt itself is light and satisfying. That said, I’ve noticed inconsistencies in the flavor across different packs. Sometimes it tastes good, but other times it lacks the usual freshness or has an odd aftertaste. Definitely not as enjoyable as I had hoped.” – Clendar K., Austin, TX

“At first, I was drawn to this yogurt because of the advertised health benefits and flavor combination. While it does feel gentle on my stomach, the flavors feel a bit too generic and don’t stand out. For the price, I was expecting something a little more unique.” – Daniel R., New York, NY

  1. Larkin Hensley

Tastes okay, but pricey for daily snack
The yogurt is smooth and fairly tasty. I noticed a slight improvement in bloating, but it’s not very noticeable. Some flavors are too sweet, so I usually go with plain. Overall, it’s okay, but not effective.
  2. Lauren M. Hughes

activia helped somewhat, but didn’t fix my digestive issues
I’ve heard great things about Activia, so I decided to try it for my digestion. It tasted fine, and I did notice a little improvement, but nothing major. Some days it worked, some days it didn’t, and the results just felt inconsistent. I was hoping for something more reliable. Not a bad product, just not as effective for me as I expected.
  3. Rowan Baxter

    Activia’s overblown claims, underwhelming results
I ate two 4-oz cups of Activia vanilla yogurt daily for three weeks, hoping for less digestive grief. It’s creamy, but the sugar’s noticeable, and it gave me mild bloating at first. My gut’s about the same still gassy, no real relief. For $7.99 a 12-pack, it’s not worth the hype. I’m switching to plain yogurt. It’s not awful, but don’t expect much.
  4. Sophie Bennett

Activia yogurt offers little gut health impact
I consumed Activia, two 4 oz cups daily, for four weeks. The strawberry flavor was pleasant, but I noticed no real change in bloating or digestion. Mild gas persisted, and the high sugar content (12g per serving) was a drawback. At $7 for a 12-pack, it’s pricier than regular yogurt with similar results. I hoped for more from the probiotics but stopped after a month.
  5. Bill Gable

    Taste is terrible!
I have tried the vanilla flavor of this brand and the taste is similar to spoiled milk. Mixed with strawberries helps, but that unpleasant taste comes through. I don’t buy it anymore.
  6. Landon

I have eaten Activa about 3-4 years
I have had gut issues for years. Opioid-induced. Finally, I tried Activa yogurt. It said on the label to give it a week (or something like that) so I did. It changed everything. Since my gut issues stem from 30 years of Dr. prescribed opioid use, I still need to use PG. (or any one of 100s of generic exact duplicates to Miralax) It’s as easy on your body as any other laxative.

Anyway, after eating one little cup of Activa for about a week or so, I was finally able to get some relief. I have eaten one every day since. Usually right after some fruit, and wait 2-3 hours before eating anything else. It seems to still work but I wouldn’t know since I have never stopped using it.

Guess I should try that and see what happens but I don’t want to go back to before I started. It was hell.

Activia Yogurt Ques and Ans

  • Q: How can live bacteria be considered safe? Lactobacillus made me seriously ill and put me in the hospital for three weeks. It entered my bloodstream and spread to my gallbladder and liver.

A: Live bacteria in probiotics are generally considered safe for many healthy people, but they may not be suitable for everyone. Since Lactobacillus previously caused a serious infection for you, you should avoid probiotic products with live bacteria unless your doctor specifically approves them. Please speak with your healthcare provider before using this product.

  • Q: Taking one daily, how long can it be taken.

A: Activia can be taken daily as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. There’s no specific time limit on how long you can take it, as it is a probiotic yogurt designed for regular, long-term consumption to support digestive health. However, if you have any concerns or experience any issues, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider.

  • Q: How important is the expiration date? Is it safe to go past it? How many days? We try to be real careful about following these, but my husband just brought some Activia home from the store that has already expired (by six days). Frustrating! I would like a professional opinion on this! Thank you!

A: The expiration date on food products is crucial for freshness and safety. Consuming products that have exceeded their expiration date, including yogurt like Activia, is generally not safe. It is advisable to avoid consuming expired products. If you have purchased an expired product, we recommend returning it to the store where you bought it.
