According to BBC News, infertility rate has dropped substantially compared to last decade. It is estimated that 1 in 6 American couples don’t get pregnant after trying for almost a year. Definition of Infertility

Infertility is defined as incapability of a woman to get pregnant after 1 year of trying to conceive. For women over age 35, infertility is failure to get pregnant after 6 months of no use of contraception. Women who are able to conceive but fail to stay pregnant can also be a case of infertility.

If you are a couple trying to conceive a baby sooner than later, read on following natural measures to boost* fertility.

1. Protect sperm. Boost* sperm count by wearing boxers than briefs; not smoking; avoiding scrotal injury; not using sex toys or cheap lubricants; reducing* stress; steering clear from chemicals, cleaning agents and pesticides; and maintaining a healthy weight. Men who make it a habit to place their laptops on their laps are likely to have impaired sperm production, a study revealed.

2. Protect egg. Improve* egg quality and ovarian function by drinking lots of water and keeping well hydrated; performing daily exercise; getting a fertility massage; eating the right foods especially salmon, broccoli, dark leafy vegetables, ginger, turmeric and halibut; and taking multivitamins. Mothers should also limit intake of coffee and soda drinks since caffeine can impair fertility. However, 1 to 2 cups of coffee a day is acceptable.

3. Having sex during the most fertile days. The most fertile days of women are 5 days before ovulation or on the day of ovulation. Also, the more you perform sex during your fertile days, the more likely to get pregnant. However, having sex multiple times in a day decrease* the chance of contraception.

4. Choose lubricants wisely. When you are experiencing vaginal dryness, your doctor might recommend the use of lubricants. It should be noted that there are many types of lubricants available in the market depending on their use. Majority of lubricants work by killing sperms, while there are also some others that protect them and therefore, improve* sexual life. Go for natural oils such as canola oil and peanut oil instead.

5. Have a morning quickie. While it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg cell. Strength in numbers still matters. Consider a morning quickie since sperm count is highest in the morning, thus making it the best time for making a baby.

6. Weight control. A healthy weight can aid conception. In a clinical study, researchers have found out that couples who are obese or overweight took more time to get pregnant. Weight control not only benefits fertility but also reduces* the chances of developing heart disease in later years.

7. Eat pregnancy Superfoods. Certain foods help improve* conception odds. Mothers who want to conceive a baby sooner than later should eat foods high in fiber, rich in protein and low glycemic. Opt for monosaturated fats such as olive oil than trans fats (found in processed foods). Fats are acceptable but should be consumed in moderation.

8. Cut back smoking and alcohol drinking. There is no way these two can help boost* fertility. Smoking can impinge on human fertility by reducing* sperm production and damaging DNA. On the other hand, alcohol drinking increases* the risk of birth defects in pregnant mothers.

9. Manage stress. The link between stress and infertility is strongly established. Study shows that women who experience less stress, or those who underwent therapy to alleviate stress are more likely to conceive. Manage stress naturally by listening to music, getting regular massage, attending yoga session or go shopping. Acupuncture is also another stress reduction* technique.

10. Avoid chemical agents. Certain chemical agents threaten the ability of couple to conceive. It is reported that there are hormone-disrupting chemicals that may impede the union of an egg and a sperm cell. These disrupters include phthalates in detergents and nail polish and bisphenol A in plastics and pesticides. MSG and fluoride are also associated with reduced* fertility rate and low sperm production count.

At this present time of writing, the global trends of infertility are decreasing*. While this is certainly a good news, infertility remains a challenging issue in the society mainly because more and more couples are exposed to environmental irritants and unhealthy practices that influence the chance of conceiving. Frequent sex, eating fertility superfood, cutting back smoke and alcohol intake, regular exercise and avoiding chemical irritants are common measures that couples may take to boost* chances of pregnancy.
