Arguably one of the most enjoyable aspects of sexual intercourse, the male orgasm is the result of several physical processes designed to stimulate the penis and induce ejaculation, or the transmission of sperm out of the penis. The “orgasm” is commonly defined as the release of gathered sexual tension accumulated during the sexual response cycle, a four-stage process which explains the physiological occurrences taking place during sexual arousal.

Although orgasms commonly occur during sex for most men who are in decent sexual health, not all individuals may experience ejaculation during orgasms due to a variety of physiological conditions. It is important to distinguish between orgasm and ejaculation due to the fact that ejaculation does not necessarily occur following an orgasm. Dry orgasms, as they have come to be labeled, provide men with the pleasurable sensations associated with the climactic stages of the sexual response cycle without the expulsion of semen from the penis.

Male Sexual Stimulation

During the sexual response cycle, a man’s penis and testicles undergo a variety of changes. One of the most obvious signs of sexual arousal is the male erection. As men beginning to experience sexual excitement, blood flows increases* to the penis, preparing it for the possibility of vaginal penetration and ejaculation. That being said, an erection is not necessary to achieve sexual arousal. Men suffering from impotency, also referred to as erectile dysfunction, will typically experience the same levels of arousal of other men but are unable to either achieve or maintain an erection, depending upon their particular condition. Along with the appearance of an erection, other commonly observed signs of male sexual stimulation are rapid heartbeat, increased body temperature and flushing of the skin. Delayed Ejaculation

Although delayed ejaculation may be diagnosed more infrequently than more noticeable male orgasm problems, such as retrograde ejaculation and premature ejaculation, it remains nonetheless a defined and therefore treatable sexual health condition. Delayed ejaculation is commonly defined as a man’s inability to reach orgasm within a ‘standard’ length of sexual intercourse, ranging from 4-45 minutes. In may cases, delayed ejaculation may result in the inability to ejaculate entirely, significantly decreasing* the probability of achieving pregnancy with a female sexual partner. Some of the most common physical causes of delayed ejaculation are hypogonadism, thyroid conditions (primarily hyperthyroidism), substance abuse or prostate issues.

Multiple Orgasm

Although the actual validity of a male achieving multiple orgasms remains to be fully proved, some doctors believe that men are capable of experiencing successive orgasms, most often when dry orgasms (orgasms that do not involve ejaculation) occur. Various physical techniques can be used to stop* the ejaculatory process, ranging from applying pressure to the perineum during orgasm to multiple approaches at climax, which, at the final onset of orgasm, results in more powerful* sensations for an extended period of time.

Physiological Response in Men

The ability to achieve orgasm produces* a wide variety of physiological responses in men, many of which conform directly to the sexual response cycle. During orgasm, particularly in orgasms that involve ejaculation, men will typically experience “waves” of pleasure, with each wave coinciding with the onset of an ejaculatory pulse. As the ejaculation continues, the pleasure derived from each “wave” will decrease*, as will the volume of semen expelled from the penis. Following the conclusion of climax, blood pressure will drop significantly from its heightened state, and the man will enter the “resolution” period, in which the size of his erect penis will reduce* significantly as he becomes flaccid once again and is incapable of achieving orgasms for a short period of time. Due to the hormones released during orgasm, men will typically experience increased levels of relaxation and euphoria during this period.

Final Verdict

Although the majority of men may simply be content to sit back and “let it ride,” the male orgasm is actually quite a sophisticated, complex process. Although it’s easy to get caught up in the pleasurable sensations, the mechanics that allow a man to successfully ejaculate play a significant role in the male physiology during sex.
