It is an injury that occurs when an individual twists their ankle to a point where the ligaments inside the ankle are torn off. Ankle sprains usually occur during sports activities or any other physical activity.

  • While playing soccer
  • While getting tackled
  • While stepping on uneven ground.
  • With weak tendons

How can it be Diagnosed?

  • Doctor may order X-ray If he suspects any bone fracture.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to rule out any series damage especially what is done to the ligaments and tissues in the ankle area.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scan; if there is a fracture suspected but can’t be seen by the X-ray.

What is the Treatment?

The patient is treated according to the severity of the sprain. Most patients are treated with:

How to Prevent Ankle Sprains?

  • Bandages if the ankle is susceptible to injury
  • Doctors may advise using braces if pain is encountered
  • Stop Using high heels
  • Warm ups and stretching
  • Exercises to increase the strength of the ankle
  • Wearing suitable footwear
  • Don’t over-exercise and stop if fatigue is felt
  • Concentrate while walking on uneven ground
