New Year, New You! You jumped onto the bullet train into 2018 with a clean as a conductor’s whistle diet plan, brand new fat torching workout routines and with Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ on repeat in your brain instilling perpetual beast mode! If you’re still plowing through January this way, AWESOME WORK! It’s not easy to give up the holiday feasts and libations cold turkey, but you’re DOING IT (with an iron will at that)! You truly are my inspiration!
Let’s shift over to the other part of the population to take a peek at what’s going on in their reality. Our subject who shall not be named, but we will just call this person…”Yours Truly” is on quite a different vessel than the fitness bullet train.
She decided to cut out alcohol and sugar purely for superficial reasons. Even after a casual night out with just two cocktails, the following day she’d wake up with a puffy body and face that no amount of Anastasia’s famous contour palette could help, not to mention ruddy skin caused by dilation of blood vessels, and an unfortunate loss of her normally sharp and quick-witted remarks. We’re only talking about the short-term effects here. Over time, alcohol consumption ages the face with wrinkles and saggy skin.
Growing up, we’ve been told eating too much candy will give us rotten teeth. If you weren’t scarred for all of eternity from getting your bratty kid cavities fixed at the dentist, then your cavities probably weren’t life-changing enough for you to swear off sugar for the rest of your life.
Constant indulgences of candy, soda or even high acidic fruit such as grapefruit and pomegranates can cause damage to tooth enamel. Even as hard as the enamel is, it can still erode which creates a more susceptible surface for discoloration and tooth sensitivity. That’s not even half of the negative effects of sugar.
It also weakens the collagen (the key component in youthful skin) in the largest organ in our body causing it to lose it’s suppleness and radiance. The stiffening of collagen fibers causes the skin to lose its elasticity and become more vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles.
Okay, I’m done with the negative talk. If you’ve cheated on your clean eating diet or skipped an extra day or two at the gym, please don’t beat yourself up over it. Although I’m all for setting goals, it’s important to set attainable and realistic targets in alliance of your lifestyle and habits. From there, you can set your goals incrementally higher with each achievement.
For example, instead of declaring to only eating steamed fish and asparagus for 3 months straight, set a small short-term goal like alternating 3 days of restricted meals and 1 day of “normal” meals. Seems fair, doesn’t it? Let’s turn the page for a moment and think about this: diets have the stigma of things that are stripped from our lives be it, sweets, booze or carbs.
A more positive approach would be replacing a vice with something more healthy especially at the start and end of your day.
Usually, when we eat something we’re not supposed to we feel guilty or regretful, but when we eat something healthy, we become proud of ourselves.
This is especially true when we know the health benefits of what we’re doing or ingesting. I want to share this special concoction of mine that I drink every morning upon wakening and before retiring at the end of the day.
Each ingredient has a purpose to improve your internal health, and as cliche as it sounds, beauty is created from the inside out!
Combine the following in a cup and mix with warm, but not boiling water as water that is too hot can destroy some of the properties in the ingredients:
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1/2 of a fresh lemon, juiced
1 teaspoon raw honey
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
pinch of ground black pepper
Apple Cider Vinegar
- Regulates blood sugar levels
- Aids in weight loss
- Lowers cholesterol
- Improves skin texture and pigmentation
Fresh Lemon Juice
- High in alkalinity
- Full of antioxidants
- Full of antioxidants
- Boosts immune system
- Improves brain function
- May help with depression
Black Ground Pepper
- Exponentially brings out the bio-availability of turmeric
- Improves digestion
I should point out it’s best to enjoy this purifying power potion 30 minutes before or after you brush your teeth as the lemon juice can trigger tooth sensitivity.
Personally, I prefer to brush 30 minutes after drinking it as I want to avoid any risk of the turmeric staining my teeth (although turmeric has been known to be used to WHITEN teeth when combined with other ingredients).
Another option is to sip it through a straw to bypass your front teeth in which the straw will come in handy to mix the turmeric that settles to the bottom. The taste is something to get used to if you’re not part of the culinarily adventurous population, but the teaspoon of honey definitely helps with the tartness passing through your taste buds!
There is nothing more motivating than seeing the results of your effort! You’ll almost immediately notice your digestion improving with this morning and evening ritual and as a little more time passes, you’ll see your skin getting that radiance back! That, combined with your short-term goal, whether it be alternating super clean eating days with normal eating days or doing a drop in hot yoga class just once a week, will leave you feeling accomplished and compelled to maintain a routine!
