In 2016, the anti-aging market was worth $250 billion and it is projected to reach $331.41 billion by 2021. The anti-aging market is swamped with anti-wrinkle creams and serums, chemical peels, anti-pigmentation therapies, Botox and other approaches. Some treatments work, while others are ineffective.
We are led to believe that a truly effective anti-aging strategy is available only to the rich and famous, but that’s not entirely true. You can rejuvenate your appearance without spending a dime. A new study confirms that facial exercises are, indeed, effective anti-wrinkle strategy.
Facial Exercises and Your Appearance
Facial aging doesn’t only include loss of skin elasticity and photodamage. Deeper substructural volume loss of fat and muscle plays a role in the aging process too. Exercises created specifically for facial region i.e. facial yoga have become popular lately and it was only a matter of time someone will decide to test their efficacy.
For the purpose of the study, they enrolled 27 participants aged 40-65 with photodamage, mild to moderate facial atrophy, and with an interest in facial exercises. They received formal instruction on 32 facial exercises and attended two live 90-minute muscle-resistant facial exercise training sessions with Sikorski.
Ladies were asked to perform facial exercises at home for 20 weeks. During first 8 weeks, participants had to perform these exercises 30 minutes a day. Then, they were asked to do the exercises for 30 minutes every other day during remaining 12 weeks.
Researchers took photos of participants prior to the beginning of the study, at eighth week, and after 20 weeks in total. They published their results in the JAMA Dermatology and confirmed that facial exercise resulted in improved* upper cheek fullness and lower cheek fullness that made ladies appear younger.
Facial exercises included the Cheek Lifter where a person opens mouth to form an O shape, positions upper lip over teeth, smiles to elevate cheek muscles, and lightly places fingers on the top part of the cheeks. Lower and lift cheeks repeatedly.
They also performed Happy Cheeks Sculpting wherein a person has to smile with lips pursed, place fingers at the corners of their mouth, slide them to the top of their cheeks, and hold the position for 20 seconds.
Three Years Younger
With the improved* fullness of the cheeks, ladies who participated in the study appeared younger. How? As we age, fat pads between muscle and skin get thinner and make face droop. These fat pads are, basically, contouring our face. When muscles underneath the skin become bigger, they shape up the facial area and minimize dropping and sagging.
Using the pictures that were taken at different stages, dermatologists had to guess the age of participants. At the beginning of the study, the average age was 50.8 years. After eight weeks of facial exercises, the average age fell to 49.6 years and reached 48.1 years after 20 weeks.
The latest study showed that regular facial exercises make a person appear at least three years younger. It’s always useful to know you can look more youthful without spending a lot of money.
Results don’t indicate you should ditch your anti-wrinkle cream. A combined approach is always a great idea. Facial exercises enlarge and strengthen facial muscles to allow the face to become firmer and get a better contour.
