World Sleep Day

What Is World Sleep Day?

World Sleep Day is a yearly public education and awareness campaign for promoting the importance of sleep. It is organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine. During the day, the Sleep Association members of the Foundation will host different events in their communities for providing sleep education and screening to the general public. From past few years, they have investigated various topics revealing important information that can be used for improving sleep quality in children and adults alike.

5 Reasons Why Sleep Is Important

5 Reasons Why Sleep Is Important
  • Sleep keeps the heart healthy
Lack of sleep has been linked to cardiovascular problems including high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. These two can increase risk of heart disease and stroke. Studies have found that getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night can help keep the heart healthy and prevent cardiovascular issues.
  • It lowers stress level
Lack of sleep causes the body to enter a state of stress. This makes the different body functions more active which can increase blood pressure and boost the production of stress hormones. Stress hormones then make it difficult to fall asleep while increased blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Getting a good night’s sleep helps break the cycle and counteract the effects of stress on the body.
  • Sleep reduces chronic inflammation
Increased stress hormones cause chronic inflammation disorders like periodontitis, rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis. Chronic inflammation also significantly hastens the aging process which can cause premature skin aging signs.
  • Sleep boosts memory
Many processes occur when a person sleeps. This includes memory consolidation wherein the brain processes the day and makes connections between events, experiences, moods, feelings and memories. During sleep, this is an important time for the brain to shape memories and make connections which will make it easier for the person to retrieve memories later on.
  • Sleep improves both physical and mental performance the following day
Getting enough sleep allows you to perform optimally the next day not just physically but mentally as well. Not getting enough sleep can even sometimes lead to fatal accidents and other mistakes that can have significant consequences on your career or life.

Purpose of World Sleep Day

The main goal of World Sleep Day is to essentially promote the importance of sleep. It is also the aim of the public education and awareness campaign to impart useful tips to the public for promoting quality sleep.

Purpose of World Sleep Day

Simple Ways to Improve Sleep Quality

  • Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule
This is very important for getting quality sleep regularly. You need to go to bed and wake up at approximately the same time. This will keep your internal clock set and prevent disturbances that can cause sleep problems. Avoid sleeping in even during weekends because this can wreck your internal clock.
  • Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Other Compounds That Can Interfere with Sleep
Caffeine is the enemy when you’re trying to sleep. So you should avoid coffee, tea, chocolate and other caffeinated food or beverages about 5 hours before bedtime. Nicotine in cigarettes can also prevent quality sleep. Alcohol can help you go to sleep, but it tends to interfere with sleep when it is being digested by the body which causes sleep interruptions.
  • Improve Your Sleep Environment
Your room should be dark, quiet and cool if you want to get quality sleep. You may need heavy curtains, soundproofing and other changes if your bedroom isn’t sleep-inducing. If you live in a noisy place, then it may be time to move.
  • Go to Sleep When you’re Really Tired
Try exercising in the morning which can boost your energy throughout the day and get you truly tired at night. Just remember not to exercise right before bedtime since this can get in the way of sleep. If you’re not asleep in 20 minutes, then get out of bed and do something else to relax. Go back to bed when you’re really sleepy.
