What Is Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Day?

Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Day is held on the 22nd of February as a reminder for everyone to live healthier lives. It is not just about eating enough fruits and vegetables but also considering the fact that everything that goes into the body should provide some benefit. It is also the time for spending quality moments with loved ones and friends which is important as well for an overall healthy lifestyle and well-being. The problem is that most people start the year with a long list of resolutions which usually includes eating healthier and exercising more. Then after a week or two they go back to their old unhealthy ways.

Healthy Lifestyles Awareness Week focuses on informing the public of the following health tips:

Healthy Lifestyles

1. Lower Salt Intake

Too much salt intake increases blood pressure in the long run which also increases risk of heart disease and stroke. The intake of processed foods and fast food should also be decreased because these are typically high in sodium and other preservatives that are bad for general health. Salt intake should only be around 6 grams a day for adults and this equates to only a little more than one teaspoon.

2. Get Your Daily Dose Of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin since it is created by the body after sun exposure. About 25% of children have a vitamin D deficiency especially because most children spend a lot of time indoors today. The result is brittle bones and other health problems. There are vitamin D fortified foods like cereals and beverages for those who don’t want to be exposed unprotected to the sun.

3. Increase Calcium Intake

Calcium is a very important mineral not just for healthy bones and teeth. It is also vital for other bodily functions like the contraction of muscles.

4. Eat A Balanced Diet

Balance is the key to having a healthy diet. You need to eat a wide variety of unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, starchy food, and lean protein sources. You need the right ratio of fat, carbohydrates, and protein.

5. Limit Alcohol Intake

Too much alcohol is bad for your health because of many reasons. It can even lead to damage of your internal organs specifically the liver with long-term alcohol abuse. According to guidelines from the government, men should only consume three servings of alcohol daily while women should only consume a maximum of 2 servings a day.

6. Exercise Regularly

Being active physically is an important part of good overall health. There are many forms of exercise and you just need to find one that suits your preferences. Even 20 minutes of workout a day can help improve your health. It would be best to combine cardiovascular exercise with some weight training to strengthen your heart and other muscles in the body.

7. Stop Smoking

Aside from cancer, there are many other negative health effects of smoking. In fact, smoking increases the risk of more than 50 serious health conditions. It can even decrease your fertility aside from making you smell like an ashtray.

8. Socialize

Quality time with friends and family can help improve your health according to several studies. In fact, married people and those who have friends have been shown to live longer when compared to those who are lonely and isolate themselves socially.

9. Stay Hydrated

This is very important especially when you live in a hot place. You need at least 8 glasses of water a day but this number increases when you sweat a lot due to physical activity or the climate.
