National Arthritis Awareness Month
Since this is a growing problem, the whole of May was set as the National Arthritis Awareness Month.
Since its introduction, the month has indeed helped in raising awareness about the disease. In addition to that, it has offered a great platform for anyone to know more about what is being done in fighting the disease.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is not a disease on its own. Rather, it is a term representing over 100 diseases that affect muscles, bones, and joints. These diseases are sometimes referred to as rheumatoid diseases.
At the moment, statistics show that arthritis affects about 50 million U.S adults. Additionally, it is also known as the leading cause of disability.
With such high numbers, it makes more sense for all of us to come together this May and deal with this growing problem.
What Causes Arthritis?
Because we are dealing with a lot of diseases here, it is not easy to identify one cause for all of them. Below, you will find the most common causes of arthritis.
Previously, it was believed that this was a disease for old people. But with time, we have seen young people suffer from it too proving that the belief was a myth.
Symptoms and Diagnosis of Arthritis
Arthritis does not have a single symptom; we should remember that there are over 100 diseases included in that term. However, there are some symptoms which apply to most of these diseases:
This usually results in discomfort and difficulty in mobility.
Diagnosis of arthritis is done by a rheumatologist. Unfortunately, diagnosis is not that easy and will usually take a couple of visits.
In its early stages, arthritis is harder to diagnose. You are advised to visit a rheumatologist near you anytime feel prolonging the pain. Research has shown that it is very important to get help immediately.
Other types of arthritis respond better to medication in the early stages.

Treatment of Arthritis
Treatment will also depend on the type of arthritis you have. Like said above, early treatment will ensure your chances of getting better. Your rheumatologist will advise on the best form of treatment depending on the type of arthritis you have.
Currently, physical and occupation therapy seems to be the most common forms of helping those with arthritis. In addition to this, you might be given NSAIDs.
There is no medication that will completely cure this disease. The methods above are effective only to help you to deal with the pain. But with time and upon following your rheumatologist’s advice, your symptoms might improve.
Purpose of National Arthritis Awareness Month
The month was set with the aim of bringing those affected and those not knowledgeable about the disease together.
The month of May is the best time to know about what is arthritis, how it is caused, available treatment and more. The problem is that it can affect anyone at any time. And knowing more is the only way to prepare yourself for fighting it.
Every year, the month has a theme. Apart from sharing more information on the disease this year, the events will focus on motivating the public and teaching more about the need for physical activity.
It has been noted that when one has arthritis, they tend to avoid using the affected area as it might be painful. This might help in the short-term, but it is counterproductive in the long run.
Message on National Arthritis Awareness Month
This month focuses on letting people know more about the disease. There are lots of activities that are done throughout the month aimed at achieving that goal.
In addition, there are other activities that are aimed at raising money that goes towards research on arthritis and supporting those affected.
This year, though, the focus will be on the benefits of physical activity.
