We all think of the fall season as a fresh new start. The kids are back in school and lazy summer days are over. What better way to kick off this season than to feel like a fresh new version of you?! I came up with five tips to help you remain balanced, healthy, and feeling great.
These are tips anyone can do on a day-to-day today basis. Please consult with your medical provider before adding anything new to your routine.
1. Dry Brushing
Dry brushing is a very simple and at-home mini- detox daily routine. You can purchase a dry brush at any beauty store or local pharmacy.
Dry brushing helps with circulation, lymphatic drainage, and provides a great boost* for your energy levels! Before you take a shower, simply start from your feet and work your way up using counter-clockwise circular motions moving away from the heart. This is an invigorating feeling and also keeps your skin super smooth and soft!
2. Eat Whole Foods, Organic, And In Season
Eating local organic foods that are in season can be very beneficial. Food that isn’t in season are usually grown in something called a hothouse or can be shipped from other areas of the world, which doesn’t make it local and this can greatly change the flavoring of the produce.
Fall has some great seasonal vegetables and fruits. These include beets, apples, sweet potatoes, winter squash, spaghetti squash, figs, cauliflower, pumpkin, cabbage, eggplant, chard, radishes, cranberries, pomegranate, and many more!
Eating local and organic foods is beneficial for our health because these foods aren’t sprayed with harmful chemicals and pesticides.
You can even get creative and start growing and harvesting your own plants in your backyard. It is a great way to be outside, get connected with nature, and grow some delicious foods in season!
3. Apple Cider Vinegar In Water Every Morning
This is another great way to detox, fight off bacteria, and get a boost* of energy. You’re going to need energy for all that pumpkin picking this season, so why not start every morning with about a capful of apple cider vinegar in water?
This drink has SO many amazing benefits including: lowering blood pressure, improving* digestion, helps aid in weight loss*, and has many powerful healing compounds such as an extra dose of magnesium, enzymes, and probiotics.
Speaking of probiotics, you can always ingest more by incorporating fermented foods into your diet for optimal gut health. Our gut health affects our overall health and can even affect our brain.
The enteric nervous system (our little brain aka our gut) may cause mood changes experienced by people coping with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other bowel problems such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, pain and stomach upset (Healthy Aging, 2017).
All of these benefits are essential for important gut health, which will not only jump start your day but also create a good segue into the new season!
4. Get Outside!
This is an important tip for everyone during any season. Since Fall is filled with beautifully coloured trees and leaves, you’re going to want to be outside as much as you can. Spending time outdoors can improve* your mental outlook and, of course, have physical benefits as well.
Being outdoors also gives your body a dose of necessary Vitamin D, which is a natural mood booster! Nature also improves* concentration, helping children with ADD as well as the elderly who are in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia (Whitley 2016).
There are so many ways to be outside this Fall season. Try gardening, or decorating the front of your home, going for a long walk once a day, taking your lunch break outside, or playing with your dog at a dog park instead of inside.
There are so many simple ways we can get outside, even with most people’s busy schedules. It is a small commitment but one that will be making you mentally and physically stronger and happier.
Meditating is a really great practice to start. Meditating can help combat stress and anxiety as well as changing our brain chemistry to deal with painful situations that may enter your life.
Meditating also increases* our awareness for empathy and compassion (Art of Living, 2017). Sharon Salzberg is a meditation teacher and author who shares many Love and Kindness meditations on her site and in her books that I highly recommend.
Meditation is such a great self-care practice and helps us become more aware of our emotions and thoughts and create space from them without letting them take over our well-being.
There are also physical benefits of meditation. These include: lowers blood pressure, lower levels of blood lactate which helps against anxiety attacks, decreases* pain in the body, increases* serotonin production, improves* our immune system, our behaviour, our mood, and increases* our energy levels (Art of Living, 2017).
Meditation is easy to practice. Just taking a few moments out of your day to stop and sit with yourself is really beneficial.
Even for the busiest person, one can find ways to meditate by using certain meditation apps or simply just sitting and focusing on the breath for a few minutes and trying not to think about anything else.
With meditation becoming a popular “trend, “there are so many reading materials, audios, and even retreats to go on that will enhance* your practice. I highly recommend!
Let’s treat* this Fall season as a fresh new start for our overall health and well-being. Between the dry brushing to meditation to the outdoors, I’m sure you can find some time to do one of these beneficial practices.
