Overview
For a sexually active woman, one common practice of relieving sexual tension is through masturbation.
During masturbation, there are two approaches that can be used.
(1) One of the approaches is to use clitoral stimulation which involves stroking of the clitoris gently or rapidly depending on the person masturbating until the sexual tension is relieved.
(2) The other approach is through vaginal stimulation which involves the use of a sex toy or the fingers which are inserted into the vagina to stroke the pelvis floor until one releases the sexual tension in them. Both approaches can also be pursued to masturbate.
In most cases, there is little or no residue from masturbation other than a little clear jelly-like substance that comes from the vagina. The body produces this substance as a lubricant.
It is, however, abnormal to see vaginal bleeding after masturbating. This should serve to tell you that something is amiss. There are several causes that may cause bleeding after masturbation, as discussed below.
What Causes Bleeding After Masturbation?
According to Steady Health, bleeding as a result of masturbation can be a scary monster to deal with and an embarrassing one to talk about as well. This is because most women will have no idea as to why they are bleeding in the first place [1].
The most common occurrences of the blood will be immediately after masturbation or when one goes to pee. The blood can also trickle bit by bit and stain the underwear of the wearer.
If it is the first time masturbating and an object such as a dildo is placed inside the vagina, bleeding might result.
The reason can be attributed to the sex toy breaking the hymen inside the vagina.
The hymen is a thin piece of skin that is found inside the vagina which is normally torn during the first sexual encounter.
Use of sex toys can cause the hymen to break and thus vaginal bleeding occurs.
In normal cases, bleeding may last 4 days to a week. If this continues, seeking medical attention is recommended.
Another possible cause of bleeding after masturbation could be that you are starting your periods.
This is often the case especially when you are at the beginning of the cycle.
It is therefore possible that your periods could be starting and it is good to check your calendar before you start thinking of other things that could have caused the bleeding.
It is also possible that you could have cut the walls of the vagina with your nails and thus the resultant bleeding.
It could also be that you were too rough on the vagina walls or the vulva (i.e. the outside parts of a woman’s clitoris), thus causing bruising which results in the bleeding seen [2].
These tears in the vagina normally heal by themselves in about 1-3 days.
To get around this, it is recommended that you cut any long nails so as to prevent bruising or even lacerations to your vagina.
Repeated masturbation before there is adequate healing of the areas that were bleeding can prolong the period it takes to heal or even complicate the problem further.
Use of tampons while healing takes place is discouraged.
Another cause of bleeding after masturbation could be that you are pregnant.
Bleeding after masturbation is very common in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy according to the NHS.
Within this time, it is possible that you may not be wary of the fact that you are pregnant.
The blood comes as a result of the cervix bleeding, especially if you masturbate using several sex toys such as dildos.
If you have been sexually active, it is advisable that you get a pregnancy test, just to rule out this cause.
Cervical dysplasia could also be attributed to the bleeding as changes on the epithelial cells lining the cervix occurs [3].
Cervical polyps could also be the causative agent for the bleeding [4].
If there is heavy use of sex toys which penetrate the vagina, there is a higher risk of heavy bleeding.
STI’s can also contribute to the bleeding seen as a result of cervical dysplasia.
Common STI’s seen to cause the said bleeding include gonorrhea, Chlamydia as well as trichomoniasis.
An infection of the vagina could also cause bleeding following masturbation, especially vaginal masturbation where sex toys are used.
One of the most common infections causing bleeding is vaginitis which is a condition referring to inflammation of the endometrium which is the innermost layer of the uterus [5].
Other infections include vaginitis or even cervicitis, infection of the vagina and cervix respectively.
As a rule of thumb, you should always seek to talk to a GP or even a gynecologist who could offer help to you faster and help you lead a more productive time.
You need not feel ashamed of what you have done or even the doctor being judgmental.
We are all humans and there is nothing new you can ever tell the doctor, so take courage and face your fears.
